3 Great bass guitar players.

Bass guitar players are important for any band as  good bass playing is important. There are many bass players in the world but some of them stand out from the rest. Here three great bass guitar players that I feel are awesome bass guitar players.

    I could out-do these guys. Granted I’ve never touched a guitar but I’m sure with a little practice… 🙂

    Great Post,
I really enjoy Victor’s slap, smooth yet so fast.
A friend of mine had the opportunity to meet him in Ottawa, lucky guy!

Your friend is indeed lucky. I would love to meet Victor one day. 🙂

I remember one day walking into a friend’s recording studio and it turned out that he was a serious musician name john Garnet , Victor Wooten’s mentor and teacher, john picked up his guitar and he played Like Wes Montgomery, to my surprise , he studied from Wes, and then called Mama Wooten on the phone and I was Blessed that day! I have been following the Wooten brother’s since including Bella Flek and the Flektones, I really love them , especially Future Man!

  3. 6 Michael Wlach September 24, 2009 at 1:57 pm

How about about Geddy Lee, Doug Wimbush & Chris Squire..?

  4. 7 mcquaya September 24, 2009 at 3:21 pm

I agree with Michael Wlach…what about Geddy? Honestly he is fantastic. 🙂

What about James Jamerson of the Motown Band? He was
the first Bass player(sideman) inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame, and cited as major influences of Paul
McCartney and Larry Malone of U2. He played on more
#1’s than all those jokers you named COMBINED. Marvin
Gaye wanted him for “What’s Going On” and he was on
a binge of about a week. He was so loaded that he played
laying down, and still killed it. Best bass line
for a single song David Hood on the early 70’s Hit
of I’ll Take You There”. Look up the Muscle Shoals Band
    and learn something.

Hi hdogg. I agree that James Jamerson is an awesome bass guitarist.

However i disagree with the ‘WORD’ that you have mentioned in your comment to describe the great bass guitarists that I have mentioned in this blog post. Billy Sheehan, Flea and Victor Wooten are talented musicians.

He was to say the best pocket and music reading part player that made motown music what it was and continues today because , some bass players need to understand that they are the pinnacle of the groove and they control not only the bottom but the pocket !
James Jamerson did all of this and more , and I wish that we can get back to real music.
The point is , I am a professional drummer ans it is all about heart and soul when playing the pocket as a Bass player , it rule the groove for the rest of the band as the foundation for the Band or song !

NO Jaco Pastorius? No Paul McCartney? (irritating personality aside he is one of the world’s best melodic bass players) Flea rocks though, he’s the funkiest member of a very funky band.

You have a good opinion also , however , this is what make our world go round variety & Diversity!

Cliff Burton is the best bass guitar player.

  8. 14 guekiller September 24, 2009 at 6:37 pm

Where is Geddy Lee and Cliff Burton?
They also contributed to the role of a bass player in a band i suppose. Even actually i think they have the right to take the positions of these 3 here…oh, haven’t i mentioned Sting? Yeah, him too.

  9. 15 thespiritdog September 24, 2009 at 7:19 pm

All these musicians are phenomenal players, but-ya-just-gotta-add Rick Finch, baby !

  10. 16 E September 24, 2009 at 7:40 pm

I checked this out hoping to see Flea’s name…
    I did.
    Good job.

Thanks for sharing the videos. Victor Wooten is a bass killer. Haha.

  12. 19 David Spira September 24, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Wooten is a monster on bass.

  13. 20 Ryen September 24, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Really for what Billy Sheehan does he should be playing guitar. Jaco, Cliff, Larry Graham, Flea, those are bassist!!

  14. 21 fashiontweets September 24, 2009 at 9:29 pm

They also contributed to the role of a bass player in a band i suppose.

  15. 22 A Minus September 24, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Flea is the best and Victor Wooten is also good. I think a good bass and a good song are better than a great bassline and a boring song!

  16. 25 irish87 September 25, 2009 at 2:16 am

    Two Words: Jaco Pastorius.

  17. 26 Tom K in Mpls September 25, 2009 at 2:16 am

The way Billy Sheehan runs trills and arpeggios, I bet he had classical training like Randy Rhodes. While these guys are super fast, try the soul of Donald Dunn.

  18. 27 Sheilah September 25, 2009 at 5:59 am

    Great list…they all sound great!

I love listening to Wojtek Pilichowski – he is an amazing bassist, too!

    Good post!

  19. 28 Max Buwaya September 25, 2009 at 6:09 am

How about John Entwistle? he’s a badass too!

  20. 29 Angele Martin September 25, 2009 at 7:51 am

There are many songs out there that are easy songs to play on your guitar as a beginner. Many of these songs do not have more than a few chords for you to play. In addition, you will find that many of these easy guitar songs are by classic artists like The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead and The Beatles.

I agree whole heartily, thank you 🙂

  22. 32 givenchance September 25, 2009 at 10:53 am

guitar always was a special instrument for me! i admire how all these guys can “work” with this instrument! Wow! I want to applaud them again and again!

  23. 33 Steven Harris September 25, 2009 at 1:21 pm

John Taylor, Duran Duran, need not apply.

  24. 34 carlos A. Boyce Jr. September 27, 2009 at 5:10 pm

There are many good players with style out there , I guess it is according to preference of taste who is great or not however, the main point is .., itis great to keep an open mind because of learning that they all have styles which we can each learn from!

  25. 35 Kim Celinder November 15, 2009 at 10:47 pm

These are actually some pretty nice bass guitar solos, thanks for finding them.

  26. 36 carlos A. Boyce Jr. November 17, 2009 at 12:02 am

Everyone has a prefereance , however , keep an open mind in becoming a stylist and understanding why music has a face , or History.
This will allow an individual in becoming well versed as well as understanding different and many historical styles!
Thank you they all are great!

Flea is a real eye opener.

These are three of the best, but there are so many unknown bassist that are just as great. There are so many talented people out here and they’re getting younger and younger.

    • 40 freeaman August 8, 2011 at 2:57 pm

HI scifibassist! I agree there are many other great bass guitar players who are unknown. I just shared my favorite ones 🙂
